Re: collecting memorabilia

We always come back with cookery books and tea towels relating to the country we have visited. Most of my collection involves photographs but also some tangible objects. I have a funny little wooden bowler hat that a ship's company gave my dad when he became a Lt Commander, it has the yellow stripes...

Re: Another New Whizz Kid Doctor

Gout can be very painful. I first experienced it years ago and after a few bouts the doc put me on Allopurinal ever since and never had another flare up. I have found that it has very little to do with diet. After my first experience of it I was told that seafood was bad for it so I ate seafood at e...

Looks nice Maursey. Nice to see spring in the air now we are in the gloom season! Jill's just gone off to Wellington (about 1½ hour drive) so I'm in charge! Well not exactly in charge, Rosie will be telling me it's time for 'walkies' soon!

Re: Why Tan?

Due to the hole in the ozone layer we get very high levels of UV and while this does encourage growth in plants, it does give us one of the highest melanoma rates in the world, (what with that ,earthquakes and volcanoes why does anybody live here? :-) )

With the Recent passing of Chum

I found this very moving! I don't know the author but they have empathy with dogs. You've given me a special gift so sorrowfully endowed And through these last few cherished days your courage made me proud. But really, love is knowing when your best friend is in pain And understanding earthly acts w...

Re: Childhood Pets

This is me and Chubba in 1945. He was named at the suggestion of my great uncle Walter Woolsey, who had served in the Royal Garrison Artillery in India. Chubbarara was a kind of kiss in the local dialect where he was stationed. I only had him for a couple of years as my dad was posted to HMS Malabar...

We've got a lime tree too Laurie. Much lighter crop but your welcome to help yourself! :-)
Yes Aardie we had to put some supports under some of the branches. I think you can see one of them in the pic. It's only in it's third year.

Takes me back to Bermuda in memory! Fell over on coral reefs, cut my hands, (still have the scars) swam around with my little friends, floated on a home made raft.

Re: Matariki

The vast majority of us are terrified of what happens after death so we (all cultures) make up stories which turn into religions which then control the masses for the benefit of those in charge of the religion. Personally, I don't fear the end. I look upon it as the last extreme adventure. If there ...

I remember when we were in Cyprus in 2009, a beach catering for the Brits and Russians (mostly) with beach sofas in rows with bright red people on them. Just lying there all day! Why on earth would you spend all day doing that when there are so many interesting places in Cyprus. Interesting food, cu...

It has volcanic connections but is largely magnatite. You can pick it up with a magnet!
This is some sprinkled on a sheet of paper over a magnet.

Matariki

What is Matariki? Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in midwinter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the ...

Re: How nice

I took Rosie for a quick walk before we went for our weekly shop and as we walked across this deck (photo taken a few months ago) I suddenly noticed that it was a bit like a skating rink! Even Rosie was getting wheel slip! It was gone as soon as the sun hit it!
