How's meat prices gone up?

Post by laurie53 »

........ or have I become extravagant? Placed my monthly butcher's order yesterday and it was more than twice what it was last month (usually about fifty quid)

I did not overspend exactly but it was a bit of a surprise.

I think the majority of food in this country is very reasonable if you avoid the fancy cuts. I can make a huge pan of chicken stew for just a few pounds using chicken portions. Lasts for days and much cheaper than the present price for fish and chips from a chippie.

Makes me laugh reading about kids going to school hungry when a bowl of porridge and slices of toast cost mere pennies.

Not complaining about the price per se just the rise in my bill!

I use an artisan butcher who raises his own pork, though he buys in his neighbours' lamb and beef, so Brexit should not have too much effect. Covid easing and people entertaining perhaps?

I live pretty high on the hog, no pun intended, and ft It gets out of hand I shall cut down on the oak smoked Gloucester Old Spot bacon, the organic gigot of lamb and pork shoulder and the honey glazed smoked ham off the bone!

The doubling of my bill simply surprised me?

You should be able to ask your butcher direct, as he is such a specialist, Laurie.

Don't forget the knock-on effects of lockdown, with loss of jobs and livelihoods and therefore less money to spend. He may have lost several lucrative customers and needs to put prices up to meet his own costs.

The last year has been catastrophic for human beings in so many ways.

No problem with a receipt, both on line when placing the order and with the order when if was delivered.

You would expect the effects of the last year to show gradually, not, from one month to the next with restrictions easing.

However, my question has effectively been answered, since nobody has reported a rise in meat prices!

Just my gluttony and expensive tastes I guess!

I might start looking at prices a bit more closely though. On line sites, having got you registered, might not be So interested in staying competitive, as they have to in the High Street.

Not being a purchaser of the best joints I've no idea on prices. However I could kill for a decent juicy steak now and again to treat myself.

Not a beef lover unless it's well disguised in steak and kidney pie or with Black bean sauce!

However, I'd Kill for some diced goat that I could marinate in a Kashmiri sauce!
